Overview:
Emelian de Durendaire is the eldest nephew of Count Durendaire, and second in line to become the Count himself, though he does not seem particularly interested in doing so and merely keeps the possibility on the back burner, so to speak. He is prematurely greying and has a few wrinkles, giving the impression of a man ten or more years his senior, and his manner can often follow, resulting in the common misconception that he is in his fifties. He often jokes about this himself, or even simply claims that he is to avoid a longer conversation. Despite his occasional quiet moments and general avoidance of spotlights, he is a man in possession of good humor and quite the eye for art, oddities, artefacts, and texts.Traits:
Despite often appearing tired, Emelian can be quite cheerful and flamboyant, and has a great love for the arts. However, while generally sociable, his poor resting habits can catch up to him, and he can become irritable or snappish when set off.More importantly, Emelian is very much prone to secrecy and privacy, and generally remains very much tight-lipped about many subjects, even seemingly harmless ones. This has lead to extensive rumours surrounding him, which he generally ignores. Regardless, he remains a good conversationalist, and is happy to ramble on about any given subject, especially artistic or intellectual.Psychology:
While Emelian is very high masking, he is autistic and suffers from PTSD, survivor's guilt, insomnia, and depression which comes and goes over the years. He will not share where exactly his trauma stems from, but many assume it has something to do with a certain period in his early twenties.Physiology:
Emelian has poor posture and mild scoliosis, separately. He typically wears corsets to correct this, sometimes disguised as waistcoats. He also uses a cane much of the time and takes medications that may or may not contain somnus (opium) and/or other substances, to ease the back pain. He also suffers occasional migraines, especially when exposed to particularly 'offensive' lights, as he describes them, but these, too, are managed with medication.Appearance:
Emelian is short for an Elezen male, especially when slouching or leaning on his cane, but he still holds a certain height advantage over many other races. He has short brown hair and a single white streak, in much the same style as the late Solus zos Galvus, though he maintains that the streak is natural as proven with a good look at his scalp, and the hairstyle is simply a convenient and fashionable one. His golden eyes, hooked nose, few premature wrinkles, particular taste in fashion, and single forehead star for head decoration are all simply coincidence as well. Of course, he does not condone the actions of the man, he simply had good taste!Abilities:
Emelian is a machinist and red mage who deals in many flavors of magic, some of which may be of the same age as the ancient red magic he meticulously studies. Of course, in Ishgardian circles, he is well aware that his 'outsider' (or, Halone forbid, 'heretical') magic may not be well received, so he sticks to techniques more typical to the Holy See.On a less combat-focused front, Emelian is in possession of a brilliant mind, most often aimed towards the metaphorical dissection of the people around him for no purpose in particular other than his own amusement. He has a great fondness of people-watching, and he remembers what he sees in startling clarity. When these abilities are not aimed at people, they are aimed instead at historical or esoteric objects and texts, which led to his job working for the Ishgardian Orthodox Church and the Inquisition. Rest assured, everyone, he is not an Inquisitor himself, and he has no interest in investigating or reporting you.Likes:
Emelian harbors a deep love of the arts, especially fashion (though he tends to stick to largely Ishgardian styles), music and theater. He collects paintings and books, both fiction and nonfiction. Lastly, as already stated, he has a great love of collecting various artefacts, whether historical, strange, or outright heretical, though the latter he firmly claims is simply to fulfill his job.Dislikes:
He strongly dislikes being interrupted and overly pushy individuals. He also has a certain distaste for individuals who are 'muscle and not much else in terms of personality' in his description, though he can warm up to them. Lastly, he dislikes extreme uptight conservatism, especially to the point of bigotry, thinking them foolish, boring, and a 'dead weight' to societal progress.Present Status:
Arr and before: Emelian has a busy period, and is rarely seen in the public eye.
Heavensward, Stormblood: Emelian has returned to the lives of those around him, and taken up a little more of a presence.
Shadowbringers-onward, verse 1: Emelian has gone on a research trip, and no one is quite sure when he will return.
Verse 2: Emelian has returned from his trip, but seems a little changed by it. No matter, all is well.Warnings:
Emelian's story deals heavily with concepts of grief, regret, necessary evils, and hidden cruelty. Each of my characters relationships are in different universes unless specified; they are not "cheating" if they are shipped with other people. I am polyamorous myself and I do have polyamorous characters, so that also happens, but generally, please assume that everything is in separate universes.
